Waqf Amendment Bill: BJP Gains NDA Support for Amendments

The BJP has successfully garnered full backing from its NDA allies, including JD(U), TDP, and LJP (Ram Vilas), for the amendments to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. The Joint Committee of Parliament approved these amendments on Monday, marking a significant step towards the Bill’s introduction in the Lok Sabha.

This development follows months of deliberations and a shift in the stance of several NDA members, including JD(U), LJP, and TDP, who had previously raised concerns regarding the Bill.

However, after extensive discussions and revisions, the allies have now unified in support of the amended Bill.

Union Minister for Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, played a crucial role in securing this consensus within the NDA. With the BJP holding 240 seats in the Lok Sabha, the backing of 16 TDP members, 12 JD(U) members, and 5 LJP (Ram Vilas) members is critical for the Bill’s passage.

Smaller allies such as RLD, JDS, and Apna Dal (S) are also expected to support the Bill.

The final Joint Committee meeting is set for Wednesday, with the Bill likely to be tabled in the Lok Sabha during the first half of the Budget Session.
