Indian Railways has successfully upgraded over 23,000 kilometres of track to support train speeds of up to 130 km/h, a significant achievement in its ongoing modernization efforts. In addition, over 54,000 kilometres of track have been enhanced to accommodate speeds of up to 110 km/h.

The upgrades include strengthening the track infrastructure, deploying advanced signalling systems, and installing safety fencing at key locations. These improvements are designed to enhance operational reliability, reduce travel times, and ensure safer train operations, benefiting both passengers and freight services.

The Ministry of Railways has noted that these enhancements will improve the overall efficiency of the rail network, contributing to faster and more reliable services. The initiative is also reflected in the financial performance of the Indian Railways, which reported a 4% increase in earnings between April and December of the current fiscal year.
Indian Railways Mission Raftaar : Enhancing Speed and Efficiency
This track modernization is part of the broader “Mission Raftaar” initiative, aimed at boosting the average speed of freight and passenger trains. The initiative also supports the ongoing electrification of the railway network and the introduction of high-speed trains like the Vande Bharat Express on major routes.
