A Delhi court has directed the registration of an FIR against journalist Rana Ayyub after a complaint was filed by lawyer Amita Sachdeva, accusing Ayyub of insulting Hindu deities and promoting Anti-india sentiments through posts on the social media platform X (Formerly Twitter).
Chief Judicial Magistrate Himanshu Raman Singh of the Saket Court observed that the complaint prima facie indicated cognizable offences under Sections 153A (promoting enmity between groups), 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings), and 505 (statements promoting public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code.
The complaint, filed in November 2023, alleged that Rana Ayyub had used her social media presence to insult Hindu deities, attack Indian unity, and spread hostility against India, its citizens, and the Indian Army. Despite several follow-ups, no action was taken on the initial complaint, leading Sachdeva to approach the court for judicial intervention.
While a preliminary inquiry had deemed the case non-cognizable, the court emphasized the seriousness of the allegations and ordered a police investigation. The South Delhi Cyber Police Station has been instructed to convert the complaint into an FIR and proceed with the investigation.
