Kash Patel, a former federal prosecutor and key ally of former President Donald Trump, has become a focal point of debate due to his recent comments on the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, India.
Patel, who has been nominated by Trump to become the next Director of the FBI, expressed strong opinions about how U.S. media outlets have covered the temple’s consecration.
During the opening of the Ram Temple, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) raised concerns about the construction of the temple, and several major U.S. news outlets, including The New York Times and CNN, focd on the event as a symbol of Hindu nationalism.
However, Patel criticized the media for what he sees as an incomplete portrayal of the situation. He claimed that U.S. newspapers have only covered the last 50 years of history concerning the site, ignoring the much longer history of the location.
According to Patel, a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Ram was originally at the site in 1500, before it was destroyed. He argued that this 500-year history was overlooked by the media in favor of a more recent narrative.
Patel believes that the media’s narrow focus on the last few decades contributes to a misleading story about the temple’s construction and the dispute over the site. He accused U.S. media of being part of a “disinformation campaign” that harms India and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Patel suggested that the U.S. establishment has been critical of Modi and other figures like Trump because of their shared political challenges with the media and political elites in their countries.
This controversy comes at a time when Patel is under scrutiny as a nominee for the position of FBI Director. His critics are concerned that his strong loyalty to Trump and his views on the FBI may make it difficult for him to maintain the agency’s independence.
On the other hand, his supporters argue that he is well-suited to realign the agency’s priorities, particularly in its handling of political issues. Patel’s remarks about the Ram Mandir only add to the growing conversation about his approach to international issues and how that might influence his leadership of the FBI.
