Guwahati, Jan 11: Assam police have apprehended four Bangladeshi nationals for illegally crossing the India-Bangladesh border and have handed them over to Bangladesh authorities, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed on Saturday.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Fatema Khanin, Sura Khatun, Ms Solaiman, and Md Yasin. While the exact location of their interception was not disclosed, the Chief Minister announced the development on social media, stating, “4 more illegal infiltrators apprehended near the international border! Maintaining their high state of alert, @assampolice nabbed 4 illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators and pushed them across the border.”
Since the political unrest erupted in Bangladesh in August 2024, over 210 individuals have been detained by authorities for illegal entry and sent back to Bangladesh. In response to the crisis, the Border Security Force (BSF) has increased surveillance along the 1,885-km-long India-Bangladesh border in the Northeast. Assam Police, under Director General of Police G.P. Singh, is also on high alert to prevent further illegal infiltration into the state.
