Assam News: Hundreds Defy Fishing Ban in Kaziranga Amid Magh Bihu Celebrations

Guwahati, Jan 13: In a blatant violation of the fishing ban, hundreds of individuals engaged in illegal fishing at Kalmukh Beel in the Kohora forest area of Assam’s Kaziranga National Park during the ongoing Magh Bihu celebrations. The activity occurred despite the presence of both forest and police officials, highlighting a disregard for conservation laws aimed at preserving the park’s biodiversity.

This illegal fishing breach violates Section 163 of the Wildlife Protection Act, exacerbating the challenges of balancing traditional cultural practices with the need to protect the delicate ecosystem of Kaziranga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In response to this growing issue, the Assam government issued a prohibitory order on January 10 under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS). The order, signed by Shivani Jerngal, Co-District Commissioner of Bokakhat, specifically targets illegal fishing and unauthorized access to Kaziranga’s wetlands, rivers, and beels during the festival period.

The decision comes after concerns from the Divisional Forest Officer of Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, who raised alarms about the impact of such violations on the park’s ecosystem. The illegal fishing activities, coupled with large crowds, have also led to traffic congestion along National Highway 715, raising law and order concerns.

The order, effective immediately, bans unauthorized access and fishing in the park’s protected areas, with exemptions for government and security personnel on duty. Violators will face legal consequences under Section 223 of the BNSS, 2023. Those seeking exemptions or modifications to the order may appeal to the Co-District Commissioner.
