Prayagraj, Jan 13: The Maha Kumbh Mela officially commenced on Monday at the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers, with over 60 lakh pilgrims taking part in the first holy dip. According to the Uttar Pradesh government, approximately 40 lakh devotees had bathed by early morning, with the number continuing to grow throughout the day.
The event, which runs from January 13 to February 26, is set to attract millions of devotees from across India and around the world. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasized that the Mela would showcase India’s rich cultural and spiritual traditions globally, reinforcing a message of “unity in diversity.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the occasion as a “special day” for those who cherish Indian values and culture. In a post on X, Modi referred to the Mela as a monumental celebration of India’s spiritual heritage, where people from diverse backgrounds come together in faith, devotion, and unity.
The Mela coincides with ‘Paush Purnima,’ which marks the start of ‘Kalpvasa,’ a period of intense spiritual practice observed by pilgrims. Local organizations, including Ram Naam Bank, are providing support to help facilitate the pilgrims’ spiritual journey.
Ahead of the official start, authorities reported that nearly 50 lakh devotees had already bathed in the Sangam on Sunday, and an additional 33 lakh participated on Saturday. With the numbers steadily increasing, over 85 lakh people have bathed in the holy rivers over the past two days, and attendance is expected to rise as the Mela continues.
