Guwahati, Jan 16: Lok Sabha MP Dilip Saikia is poised to be named the new president of Assam BJP after emerging as the only nominee for the position by the deadline for filing nominations on Thursday. The official announcement will be made on Friday, party sources confirmed.
Saikia, representing the Darrang-Udalguri constituency, submitted his nomination with 20 proposers, including outgoing state president Bhabesh Kalita, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Deputy Speaker Numol Momin. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, the returning officer for the election, received Saikia’s nomination.
The nomination process was overseen by senior BJP leaders, including Harish Dwivedi, Sambit Patra, and Sunil Bansal. Saikia’s candidacy followed consultations with the state leadership to ensure a smooth transition of power.
The formal announcement of Saikia’s appointment as Assam BJP president, along with nominations for the party’s national executive, will be made by Shekhawat on Friday.
