Guwahati, Jan 17: Dilip Saikia, the Member of Parliament from Darrang-Udalguri, has been elected as the new president of the Assam BJP. The announcement was made on Friday during a program where Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, acting as the returning officer, handed over the official appointment letter to Saikia. He succeeds Bhabesh Kalita, the outgoing president.
In his speech, Saikia, also a BJP national general secretary and a second-term MP, urged party workers and leaders to work together for the progress of Assam. He emphasized the need to make Assam one of the top five states in the country and called for actions to speak louder than words. Reflecting on the vision of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Saikia expressed pride in the BJP’s growth, with its lotus symbol now blooming across the nation.
Saikia also noted that electoral success is not the only measure of a party’s strength, emphasizing the importance of rewarding those who work selflessly for the party.
The election of Saikia was backed by key leaders including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, outgoing president Bhabesh Kalita, and other senior BJP officials. His nomination was uncontested, with 20 proposers supporting his candidacy.
During the event, 23 national council members from Assam were also announced, including Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Chief Minister Sarma, and former state president Kalita. Central BJP leaders Harish Dwivedi, Sambit Patra, and Sunil Bansal played a pivotal role in overseeing the election process and finalizing Saikia’s appointment.
