Kolkata, January 18, 2025: A Kolkata court is set to deliver its verdict today in the highly publicized case involving the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital(rgkarmch). The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the investigation following the Calcutta High Court’s intervention, has called for the “maximum punishment” for Sanjay Roy, the only accused in the case.
The horrific crime occurred on August 9, 2024, when the victim’s body was discovered in the hospital’s seminar room. The incident ignited widespread outrage, prompting protests by junior doctors in West Bengal, who demanded justice and stronger security measures in government hospitals.
The trial, which began on November 11, 2024, concluded on January 9, 2025, drawing significant attention from both the public and medical community.
