Assam Congress President Accuses Assam Police of Political Bias Over Case Against Rahul Gandhi

Assam Congress President Bhupen Kumar Borah has strongly criticized the Assam Police for registering a case against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his recent “fighting the Indian state” remarks. The statement, made during the inauguration of the Congress Party’s new headquarters in Delhi on January 15, 2025, led to an FIR being filed at the Pan Bazar Police Station in Guwahati.

Borah accused the Assam Police of being influenced by the ruling BJP, alleging that the police force had become a tool of the party. He pointed out that despite filing three complaints against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his controversial communal speeches, no action had been taken. “The police are acting as a tool of the BJP,” Borah said.

Additionally, Borah questioned the inaction of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding the alleged involvement of Sarma in the Saradha chit fund scam. “Why has the investigation into Himanta Biswa Sarma’s role in the Saradha scam not progressed?” Borah asked.

The FIR against Gandhi was filed after a complaint by Monjit Chetia, who argued that the Congress leader’s comments posed a threat to public order and national security. Chetia claimed that Gandhi’s statement undermined the authority of the Indian State and could incite separatist sentiments.

Gandhi’s statement, made in the context of his opposition to the BJP and RSS, declared, “The BJP and RSS have captured every single institution, and we are now fighting the BJP, the RSS, and the Indian State itself.” The remarks have sparked a political controversy over the limits of free speech and the role of dissent in India’s democracy.
