KOLKATA: Sanjay Roy, the former police volunteer of Kolkata, has been sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for the rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The additional district and sessions judge Anirban Das disclosed the judgment at Sealdah court on Monday.
The incident occurred on August 9, 2042, and it caused a lot of protest to take place nationwide, and people were asking for justice for the young doctor. The court declared he was guilty under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections that concern rape, causing death, and murder.
Judge Das said even though the crime was dreadful, the law standard “the rarest of the rare” the judge would have imposed the death penalty if it met that standard. Instead, Roy will be sentenced to life imprisonment with no chance of parole, which means he will be in jail for the rest of his life.
Besides the judgment, the state government even acceded to the financial demand and will pay 17 lakh rupees as compensation to the victim’s family. This money is given to the family in order to facilitate their coping with the severe loss.
The court’s judgment followed closing statements from the defense, the victim’s family, and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
This case has served as a reminder of the ongoing need to improve safety for women and ensure justice for victims of violent crimes. The public hopes this verdict will discourage others from committing similar crimes in the future.
