Guwahati, Jan 20: Apollo Hospitals said Guwahati has registered its first occurrence of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) that was confirmed after the woman was admitted to the hospital. The 75-year-old patient is suffering from the illness but gets better without the necessity of respiratory support in Medicine Unit 2 at the hospital. The patient’s husband, an 80-year-old man with similar symptoms, has also been admitted. He is on and off oxygen and viral markers have not yet been tested.
Dr. Abhijit Sarma, Superintendent of Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH), said that India has had HMPV since 2001 and that a few cases were reported in 2011. The virus generally causes similar signs of flu-like fever, cough, running nose, and respiratory infections as well. Toddlers under five and the elderly are more susceptible to the virus.
Earlier, a 10-month-old child from Lakhimpur, Assam, with the disease, and thereafter successfully treated at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh was the first reported HMPV case in the state.
What is HMPV?
Dr. Abhijit Sarma, Superintendent of Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH), explained that HMPV has been present in India since 2001, with a few isolated cases recorded in 2011. The virus primarily causes flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, and respiratory infections. Children under five years of age are most vulnerable, although the elderly are also at risk.
Public Advisory
Dr. Sarma reassured the public that there is no need for panic, as HMPV is not as severe as COVID-19. However, he emphasized the importance of preventive measures, particularly for children and the elderly. Recommendations include:
- Wearing masks in crowded places.
- Avoiding large gatherings to reduce the risk of infection.
- Seeking medical advice promptly if symptoms arise.
Vigilance and Awareness
While the situation remains under control, medical experts stress the need for vigilance and awareness to prevent further spread. Public health measures and timely medical interventions will play a crucial role in managing HMPV cases in Assam.
