Tokyo, Jan 23: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma paid homage to the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Tokyo earlier this week, symbolizing a commitment to fostering stronger cultural and diplomatic ties between India and Japan.
The visit comes after Sarma’s successful roadshow in South Korea, promoting the Advantage Assam 2.0 initiative. During the event, he engaged with leaders from sectors like renewable energy, semiconductors, and small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Notably, Sarma invited semiconductor giants such as SK Hynix and Seoul Viosys to explore investment opportunities in Assam, highlighting the state’s potential as a global semiconductor hub.
By paying tribute to Gandhi, Sarma underscored the historical and cultural connections between the two nations, which date back to the 8th century. Influential figures like Swami Vivekananda and Rabindranath Tagore further enriched this bond, while Japan’s thriving Indian community, particularly in IT and engineering, continues to strengthen ties.
With over 40,000 Indians residing in Japan, cultural exchange has flourished, especially in areas like Nishikasai in Tokyo. Sarma’s visit highlights Assam’s role in enhancing India-Japan relations while promoting investment and collaboration.
