Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, during his participation in the second edition of the Advantage Assam business summit in Japan, outlined a bold economic vision for the state, aiming to make Assam India’s next economic powerhouse. Sarma set an ambitious target to increase the state’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) to USD 143 billion by 2030.

During his address to over 80 business leaders, Sarma emphasized Assam’s record-breaking achievement of securing USD 4 billion in private investments in 2024, the highest in its history. He highlighted the state’s USD 12 billion infrastructure investment plan as a significant opportunity for global firms. “Assam is set to emerge as India’s economic powerhouse,” Sarma stated.
The Chief Minister also expressed enthusiasm about Japan’s growing interest in investing in India, particularly in Assam, and invited Japanese businesses to engage with the Advantage Assam initiative. He spoke highly of Japan’s respect for India’s leadership under Prime Minister Modi and encouraged further collaboration.
Sarma’s visit included meetings with key Japanese officials, including a dinner with Fukushiro Nukaga, Speaker of Japan’s House of Representatives. They discussed potential areas for cooperation, especially in the development of sports tourism in Assam.
As his visit comes to a close, Sarma is scheduled to meet with additional senior government representatives and industry leaders, continuing his efforts to strengthen economic ties and attract more investments to Assam.
