The All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) has demanded the immediate release of 66 former National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) members currently detained in Guwahati Central Jail. The demand comes ahead of the 5th anniversary of the Bodo Territorial Region (BTR) Peace Accord, with ABSU also calling for the full implementation of the remaining provisions of the agreement, signed on January 27, 2020.
During a press conference in Kokrajhar, ABSU President Dipen Boro emphasized the importance of fully executing the BTR Accord to ensure lasting peace in Bodoland. “We want peace to remain intact in Bodoland, and that can only happen if the agreement is fully implemented,” Boro stated, highlighting the unresolved provisions that need urgent attention.
The celebrations for the 5th BTR Accord Day are set for January 27, 2025, at the sports ground of Kashikotra Higher Secondary School in Chirang district, Assam. The event, organized by ABSU, is expected to draw prominent political figures including BTC Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro, Members of Parliament Rwngwra Narzary and Jayanta Basumatary, and BTC Deputy Chief Gobinda Basumatary. Over 3,000 representatives from Bodo organizations across the country are also expected to participate.
A major highlight of the day will be an interactive session on “Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma and the Dream for Building a Vibrant Bodo Community,” which will pay tribute to the legacy of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma and his vision for a prosperous Bodo society.
While the celebrations mark a significant occasion, concerns over the unaddressed aspects of the BTR Accord and the continued detention of NDFB leaders remain central to ongoing discussions. ABSU and other local leaders continue to advocate for the swift resolution of these issues for a peaceful and prosperous future in the region.
