The move, which came into effect on February 13, 2025, suspends the authority of the Manipur Legislative Assembly and places the state under direct governance by the President, through the Governor.

Patra, who oversees the BJP’s North East unit, emphasized the party’s resolve to restore peace in the region, which has been grappling with ongoing violence and political instability.

“There will be no compromise on the territorial integrity of Manipur. Any form of illegal infiltration will not be tolerated and will be dealt with severely,” Patra stated.

The imposition of President’s Rule follows the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh on February 9, 2025, amid escalating clashes between the majority Meitei community and the minority Kuki-Zomi tribes.

These tensions have led to widespread violence, resulting in hundreds of deaths and displacing nearly 60,000 people.

Patra clarified that under the new arrangement, the Manipur Legislative Assembly can be revived based on the circumstances and at the discretion of the President. A

dditionally, the Union Home Ministry has granted Sambit Patra a ‘Z’ category CRPF security cover in light of the ongoing security concerns.

President’s Rule, which may last up to six months, will be subject to parliamentary approval, with the central government assuming control over the state’s administration during this period.

The possibility of fresh elections remains open to restore democratic governance in the state.
