Himanta Biswa Sarma Announces Dibrugarh as Assam’s Second Capital

Dibrugarh, Jan 27: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that Dibrugarh will be upgraded to a full-fledged city and serve as the state’s second capital. The decision is part of a broader strategy aimed at improving connectivity and the overall Ease of Living in the region.

Sarma, in a post on social media platform X, emphasized that the decision was based on “solid groundwork” and aimed at enhancing urban infrastructure. “Upgrading Dibrugarh to a full-fledged city and second capital will be a step forward in ensuring better connectivity and quality of life,” he stated.

In line with the development plan, the Chief Minister also laid the foundation stones for four major flyovers in Dibrugarh, covering a total of 4.4 kilometers at an estimated cost of Rs 377 crore. These infrastructure projects are expected to significantly improve traffic flow and ease congestion in the city.

Reflecting on Dibrugarh’s transformation over the years, Sarma noted, “Once affected by curfews and unrest, Dibrugarh today stands as the proud center of Republic Day celebrations in Assam. This remarkable progress showcases the strength of India’s democracy.”

During his recent visit to Japan for the Advantage Assam Roadshow, Sarma also met with key industry leaders to discuss investment opportunities in Assam.

He engaged with Takeshi Okubo from Tokyo Electron to explore the expansion of operations in the state’s Electronic City and held talks with Yoshiaki Asakura of Yokogawa Electric Corporation regarding further investments in Assam’s energy sector.

Additionally, Sarma met Akiko Ikuina, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, to discuss fostering closer ties between Japan and Assam, particularly in terms of youth exchange programs.
