Manipur News: Congress Slams PM Modi for Prioritizing Foreign Trips Over Manipur Crisis

Imphal, Jan 14: The Congress party has criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for traveling extensively around the world while failing to address the ongoing crisis in Manipur. The criticism came on the first anniversary of the launch of the ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,’ which began in Manipur on January 14, 2024.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh accused Modi of neglecting the suffering of the people in Manipur, where ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities has caused over 220 deaths and displaced thousands since May 2023. Ramesh pointed out that while the Prime Minister has found time for foreign trips, he has not reached out to the distressed people of Manipur.

Ramesh also alleged that Modi has refused to meet with political leaders from the state, including Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, and his own party’s lawmakers. The Congress has been critical of the central government’s handling of the crisis in the northeastern state.

The ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,’ led by Rahul Gandhi, was launched in Manipur with a focus on issues like unemployment, price rise, and social justice, while highlighting the state’s ongoing turmoil. Despite the unrest, the Congress continues to demand greater attention and intervention from the central government.
