Meghalaya is all set to host the 39th National Games in 2027, with preparations well underway. A recent video conference between Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President P.T. Usha discussed the state’s ongoing efforts in upgrading its sports infrastructure.
Chief Minister Sangma outlined the significant improvements made to key sports facilities, including the JN Sports Complex in Shillong, Wahijher Stadium in Jaintia Hills, and the P.A. Sangma Integrated Sports Complex in Tura. These upgrades are part of the state’s comprehensive plan to promote sports and enhance its hosting capabilities for major events.
Sangma also highlighted Meghalaya’s previous success in organizing large-scale sporting events, such as the North East Games in 2022 and the South Asian Games in 2016, demonstrating the state’s ability to host the National Games.
Dr. D. Vijay Kumar, Commissioner of Sports and Youth Affairs, confirmed that Shillong will be the main host city for the 39th National Games, following an agreement with the IOA in 2018. Tura and Jowai will also host various sporting disciplines.
P.T. Usha expressed confidence in Meghalaya’s ability to successfully organize the Games, commending the state’s ongoing infrastructure developments and commitment to fostering a strong sports culture.
The 39th National Games in 2027 will be a significant event for Meghalaya, advancing its goal to become a major sports hub in Northeast India. An official announcement confirming the host city is expected soon.
