Aizawl, Jan 23: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has stressed the need for stronger collaboration between village and local councils and the state government to drive sustainable development. His comments came ahead of the upcoming elections for 544 village councils and 111 local councils within the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) and Lunglei Municipal Council (LMC), set for February 12.
Lalduhoma, leader of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), pointed out that government schemes often fail to reach the public when councils controlled by opposition parties do not cooperate with the state administration. He emphasized that effective development can only be achieved when village and local councils work together with the government.
The Chief Minister called on party workers to support ZPM candidates in the elections, highlighting the importance of a unified effort for progress.
The State Election Commission (SEC) has confirmed that there are 2,416 seats across 544 village councils, with 613 reserved for women, and 723 seats across 111 local councils, 195 of which are reserved for women. A total of 4,37,708 voters, including 2,22,098 women, are eligible to vote in these elections.
In response to concerns over fake news circulating on social media regarding the eligibility of candidates from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, the SEC clarified that there are no specific qualifications for contesting the polls and has directed police to investigate the matter.
The election process is underway, with the last date for filing nominations set for January 23, and the scrutiny of nominations scheduled for January 24. Candidates have until January 27 to withdraw their nominations.
