Aizawl, Jan 23:The Mizoram Truck Owners’ Association (MTOA) and local truck drivers have halted operations on the Aizawl-Silchar National Highway (NH-306/06) to protest the deteriorating condition of the road. The strike, which began at 7 am on Thursday, involves trucks carrying essential goods and construction materials. However, oil tankers and LPG trucks have continued to operate.
MTOA General Secretary Dina Tlau stated that the highway, particularly the Kawnpui-Khamrang/Sairang stretch, has been in poor condition since last year’s monsoon and remains unrepaired despite repeated promises from authorities. Tlau criticized the state government for failing to take timely action, especially during the winter months, when repairs were expected to begin.
The strike has garnered support from the Mizoram Trippers’ Association, Kolasib District Trippers’ Association, and other local truck owners and drivers.
In response to the protest, the Mizoram Public Works Department (PWD) confirmed that repair work on the Sairang-Vairengte stretch of the highway started on January 20. However, issues persist with two critical sectors, Bilkhawthlir to Kolasib and Kawnpui to Khamrang, which are still under state PWD management. The PWD has requested additional funds to continue repairs after delays due to contractor issues.
Meanwhile, the Mizoram Civil Supply Department assured that there are enough rice stocks for January and that ration distribution is ongoing. The strike has not affected the supply of oil or cooking gas, and authorities remain hopeful that truck operations will resume soon as road repairs progress.
