Sikkim News: Maghey Sankranti Mela 2025 Officially Commences at Jorethang

Namchi, Jan 14: The Maghey Sankranti Mela 2025 was officially inaugurated on Tuesday at Jorethang by the Sikkim Governor, Om Prakash Mathur, in the presence of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang. The event marks the beginning of the state’s 50th year of statehood celebrations, blending traditional cultural performances with modern elements to showcase the rich heritage of Sikkim.

Governor Om Prakash Mathur, in his address, expressed his gratitude to the CM Prem Singh Tamang for the invitation and reflected on the evolution of the Mela, which has grown from humble beginnings to a significant state event. He emphasized the importance of unity in Sikkim’s diverse cultural landscape and urged citizens to work alongside the government for the state’s future progress.

The event also included the release of pigeons as a symbol of peace, the unveiling of the official Mela badge, and the distribution of appointment orders to Anganwadi workers. Additionally, the Governor and Chief Minister felicitated 11 nurses trained under the Sikkim Inspires program, who were placed in Germany, and honored footballer Simran Gurung for representing Sikkim at the international level.

The Mela featured lively cultural performances, including dhan nach, madal dance, and khukuri dance, as well as two football matches. Sudeva FC Delhi triumphed over Sikkim Police FC in the 10th All India Chief Minister’s Gold Cup Football Tournament, while Poklok-Kamrang emerged victorious in the Constituency Level Men’s Football Tournament.

The event successfully celebrated Sikkim’s traditions and cultural diversity while marking the start of a significant year for the state.
